FINGER SUCKING

My child is 3 years old and loves to suck his finger. What can I do about it?

This is a habit that many children have in their preschool years. This behavior seems to calm the children, make them feel safe, and on the other hand, they may relieve discomfort of their gums. However, some doctors and dentists consider it worrying from 4 years and above because it increases the risk of dental problems.

To help your child stop this habit, you can do the following:

- Give the child a new stimulus when he sucks his finger. Suggest that he engage in a game or activity that he likes

- Ignore the finger sucking so he doesn't understand that you are giving him more attention this way.

- If sucking is a new behavior try to find the causes. Usually a big change in his life can be connected with it.

- Offer the child a new option with something equally comforting. Suggest he hold a stuffed animal or a towel. That is, something to calm it down.

- Give the child some incentive to stop sucking and reward him verbally.

- Explain to your child calmly the reasons why he should not suck his finger. In no case do not argue with him or shout at him so as not to cause him anxiety.
